DevLog 1 - VHS Viewing Concept

Hey everyone! First of these, I hope I can convey something helpful and resourceful here!

Firstly, a huge shoutout to another artist aiding in this indie project: Mae @3005jin! Her art and animation rock, and I'm so glad her little chibis here can bring so much life into Carter, Tristan, and Lucas! You can check out her twitter here!

Speaking of twitters (or Xs, but who doesn't hate calling it that?), the game has got an official twitter! You can check us out over at @paintedskygame, where there's sure to be more sneak peeks and clues!

Look at those serious faces next to those big grins... I had fun putting together a profile pic but a nightmare uploading it T^T

Back to development logs!

A lot of the work for this game involves a bunch of visual planning, which I've recently been chiselling away at. One big focus is exploration and collection, and I really want players to feel like they're exploring and discovering these breadcrumbs of the world!

Here's a bit of that journey with a sneak peek of some collectibles you find in the introduction exploring with Carter.

Take a peek at our first view-station, the central TV! Here's where Carter feeds her memories or Blockbuster rentals.
Firstly, you can see which tapes you can collect (there might be a few at viewing stations, so keep your eyes peeled!), alongside our off screen and tidbits of decor. Carter likes to put stickers on everything she owns, especially if they're old Playtime Co. ones, though these days she's taken to saving them more often.

Let's take a peek at one of these tapes!

Wow, talk about up close and personal! You'll be able to get a good, in-depth look at all the game curated assets, as well as a chance to read the finer details.

After some brief thoughts from our main crew mate, you'll get to have the option to view your tape or store it for another view-station.
You won't miss a collectible by skipping a first viewing, but take advantage of stations when you can. They won't always be available!
Some tapes are viewed best right away, or might require viewing for progression.

Putting tapes away allows you to leave them for later viewing and examination in your inventory. Check how far along you've made it on your collectible journey by checking your backpack!

As for viewing, I absolutely love making some of the visuals for the VHS tapes, all of the assets have been a blast to create!
(I'll be posting a bit about Documents and Snap-a-Shot Photographs in a later dev post!)
I think the Critters tapes take the cake, though. AmberLuvsBugs illustrations are adorable, and mesh naturally with  the settings of those old school 80s and 90s cartoons that would have been around during the SC days.
Some tapes might have important dialogue to catch, or the thoughts and conversation of your selected character. Take some time to listen in during recordings!

I hope I can post some of the footage from Unity to youtube, so there's more exciting things ahead!

Sorry if this is sparse, but I'll hopefully get better at devlogs as I get better at making games, haha.
Thanks for reading, see you next time!
